It’s the season for ghosts, goblins, and ghouls, but something even scarier could happen at home when you least expect it—your furnace could break down. The experts at Seider Heating, Plumbing & Electrical are here to help you face furnace problems head-on (with a few tricks of their own).
Your Pilot Light Is Out
Depending on why the light went out, this can either be a one-time incident or a regular occurrence. Many older gas furnaces have a pilot light, whereas newer heating systems use an electric igniter instead. Start by following the relighting instructions on your furnace. If the light keeps going out, it’s time to make a furnace repair call.
Your Thermostat Doesn’t Work
Sometimes what you think is a faulty furnace is actually a problem with your thermostat. Check the power source to make sure there isn’t a blown fuse. Next, replace the batteries in your thermostat’s display. Lastly, remove the face of the device and check for loose wires, or dust and dirt. Reattach the wires if you can, and use a small brush or Q-tip to remove any debris. If none of those work, it’s time to call a heating professional.
Your Furnace Is Making Scary Noises
Rumbles, squeaks, or rattles are not normal furnace sounds. These noises indicate mechanical problems, reduced airflow, or a clogged burner—all issues that can be resolved through repairs or avoided with regular furnace maintenance.
There’s No Heat Coming Through My Vents
Several things can cause your furnace to stop blowing warm air. Your furnace filters may be too dirty, preventing proper airflow (that’s why replacing your filters regularly is so important). No heat or flowing through the vents can also mean your furnace isn’t the right size for your space. Heatless vents can also indicate issues with the thermostat setting, the power source, or the gas or pilot light. Getting an annual furnace clean & check is a simple way to keep the warmth coming all season long and prevent major, costly repairs.
